The Making of The Calling

The Calling

Late last year, I did a class with @theartofprocess on the Seville cathedral gothic triptych front door pattern.

For me, painting and drawing flowers is a joy. Trying to capture the different colours embedded on the outlines, to create some sort of realistic flower, surrounding the triptych was a challenge. The tiny brush strokes used took forever to build and paint the gouache layers with. I used a Da Vinci 00000 brush to create the many strokes used in a few different shades of pinks and purples to create depth to the peony flowers. In the East, peonies not only represent feminine beauty, but also wealth and nobility of spirit. Peonies, which used to be called "roses without thorns", used to be treasured for their magical healing powers.

The idea for the outlining came about, as I wanted a different feel to it, and felt that outlining and using mixed media, instead of painting the whole thing breaks it up and adds a different dimension. The outlines give it a clean feeling, and looks almost like tattoo art.

Inspiration taken from sacred geometry, nature and the Divine. The title 'The Calling' is inspired by all this, and is what I took from my minds eye whilst in deep meditation and reflection, gathering ideas together, allowing it to flow. Don't get me wrong, it took some time to paint and arrange how it will all fit on to paper, in-between life, and trying to figure out the layout for the whole thing. Eventually, it all happened, and I'm pleased to say it's now available to buy in the gallery.
